I'm finishing up a 6 week (that turned into 7) mesocycle that was really fun. For a change, I started concentrating on achieving rep maxes higher than 5RM and mixing it up with an undulating periodized cycle. Clearly, the change in programming helped force my body into adaptation and the payout was new RM's across the board (even 5RM or less). In agreeance with what has been written in several places, change really is a good thing for muscle development.
All that being said, I'm thinking about doing something that I thought about a while back, but never really got around to trying. I may try to set some goals, or maybe even let you decide what the goals are for me, and then design a cycle that I feel will best help me to achieve those goals. Examples would be:
-In an 8 week cycle, set a new 1RM for Squat and Bench Press and also set a new PR for "Murph".
-In an 8 week cycle, set a new 3RM for Deadlift and OH Press and also set a new PR for a 5K run.
I think you get the idea... I know that you (Jaysun) are training for a 15K right now and are also trying to make gains (or at least maintain) your strength. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Anyone else who happens to be reading this is welcomed to chime in.

Either one of those are great goals. Murph is brutal...I would pick that one. What are your current 1RM's?

Either one of those are great goals. Murph is brutal...I would pick that one. What are your current 1RM's? Those are on a spreadsheet on my work computer, which is in my bag. To the best of my memory, they are: Squat: 300 lbs OH Press: 165 lbs Deadlift: 420 lbs Bench: 245 lbs Pretty much all of those were set well over 6 months ago. I stopped focusing on really heavy lifts after I got this job and haven't really tried to set a new 1RM for a long time. It might be fun to do that again for a change. I'm all ears for your ideas. I know you are training for a long run. While this isn't really the ideal time of year for me to do that, it could still be a goal.
