I love doing dips and have wanted to build a dip station for a long time now. As usual, it has to be cheap, but sturdy. Do you all have any ideas? I plan on doing weighted dips so this station would have to be able to handle probably 300 lbs.

I looked around on the web and while there are various devices and plans out there, the general consensus is that the PVC built ones are ~$75-85. For a few dollars more you could probably get a used one off of Craigslist. One idea was saw horses.

Yeah, I thought about PVC in the past but feel like it would be too easy to break if I accidentally bumped into it with a barbell or dropped something on it. Plus I'm not sure how well it would stand up to weighted dips... Right now, I'm thinking about using just 2x4's, rounding them over on top and putting some duct tape on them to keep from getting splinters. I may even hinge them so they fold down form the wall.

Well, I went to Lowes today and probably spent an hour walking around and trying to price stuff for this. At one point, I had some 1-1/4" galvanized pipe ($40) in my cart, but noticed that the floor flanges (to keep the bars from spinning) were $15 a piece! So I would've been in it for $75 plus the price of the wood. At that point I could go to Wal Mart and buy a frickin' Gold's Gym Dip and Pull-up station. I'm pissed. I really wanted to get this done for cheap. I may just build it out of 2x4's...

2x4's? ? Noooooo I know what you're thinking. I was going to round over the tops of the boards even more and put some duct tape on them to keep from getting splinters. I don't know. My wife wants a make shift clothes rack in the guest bedroom while our closet is out of commission. The idea popped in my head to just go buy some 2x4"s and two 36"x1-1/2" galvanized pipe with floor flanges. All that would cost me about $80, but hey, she would get her temporary closet and I would get my dip station once it's done.

Ha ha, I do that in the hotel room sometimes, but want somewhere to do weighted dips.

Ha ha ha. I actually saw that exact picture already and was going to do something similar. I liked how they did the floor flanges backwards because of the threading. That's almost exactly what I'm thinking of building. The galvanized pipes and fittings would cost me almost $70 though.
