My name is Trent and I live in Raleigh, NC. I workout in my unairconditioned garage gym. In my formative years, I competed in Sports like: Track, Swimming and Basketball. That all ended after high school and after a brief hiatus I joined a friend of mine named Ben (who was nicknamed "the Elephant" and this forum is named after) at Gold's Gym in Wilmington, NC, where I began the long and sweaty path of weight training and powerlifting. Endurance was still very important to me, so I continued to Run and ride my bike a fair amount in addition to weight training. This continued for many years, well after my graduation from UNCW, until a very bad shoulder dislocation forced me out of the gym in 2004. At that point, I started surfing as a way to rehab my shoulder and ended up enjoying it so much that it became my primary source of exercise. After that, I didn't see the inside of a gym for about 5 years until my wife and I moved to Raleigh, NC. It felt good to pump some iron again, but I was more or less doing a maintenance program of about 15 minutes of cardio and the "same old" weight lifting routine, week in and week out. As boring as it was, I kept that up for a few years and then stumbled upon Crossfit in January of 2013. Like many people who were bored to tears with their workout program, I was completely sucked into it and followed Main Site Wods for over 7 months straight. Eventually, however, I started to get really exhausted and after a few injuries and a few people talking some sense into me, I ended up doing my own programming that combines the structure of a traditional weight-training program with the randomness of ever changing metcons and cardio for conditioning. As of now, it is suiting me just fine. I'm making some of the best strength gains of my life, but still mixing it up with different metcons to keep it interesting. Currently, I am using the Wendler 5-3-1 Program for Powerlifting and am doing 3-4 Conditioning sessions per week in the form of metcons and cardio.
Myself and jaysun decided to start this forum after a previous forum narrowed their focus to their own clients and those who followed their programming closely. We wanted to bring that close-knit sense of community to a new place where people of all walks of life and all disciplines of training could get together and encourage each other, and also promote the sharing of ideas in hopes of constantly improving themselves and their training.
Cheers,
Trent
